Lean Six Sigma Green Belt - Tools And Methodologies

14 Aug 2021 Admin 0 Quality Management

Managers face challenges in terms of improving the quality and efficiency of the company. To solve this, they must implement the best Six Sigma tools to analyze/manage the process.

Six Sigma is an inevitably structured strategy for business process improvement.

The Six Sigma process allows the organization to find methods to eliminate them and get as close as possible to "zero errors".

If you're starting to learn about business process optimization concepts, you've come to the right place. We are introducing the Six Sigma Green Belt methods. People with no experience in this field can clearly understand what it is. Let's start:

Learn Seven Basic Quality Tools In Green Belt Certification

  • Cause and Effect (Fishbone) Diagram: This tool explores causes to a single effect (or event) through brainstorming.

  • Flow Chart: Schematically suggests the course of the process. A visual representation of the steps of the process provides an understanding of their flow before and after.

  • Pareto Chart (80:20 Rules): The vital purpose is to distinguish the main factors from many factors.

  • Histogram: It is a bar chart for examining the frequency distribution of a data set. It supports understanding the nature of the data.

  • Check sheet: It is the tool used to collect data. The control chart marks the frequency of the included data.

  • Scatter Plot: The scatter plot shows the correlation between the variables. It shows how one variable changes compared to another variable.

  • Control Chart: This chart helps you verify that the process data is under control for a shorter period.

DMAIC Model And Tools To Improve Processes

The method of defining, measuring, analyzing, improving, and controlling is a data-driven quality approach for process improvement. It is an essential part of the Six Sigma initiative and can perform as a standalone quality enhancement process.

Define

The main goal of this phase is to summarize the project plan. At this stage, the emphasis is on clearly identifying problems, process improvement objectives: the scope of the project, and identification of client's requirements.

At this step, you can recognize opportunities for Six Sigma projects. You create a complete project plan and process map. The most significant part of this stage is forming a project charter.

It is the document that is the initial design for Six Sigma projects. It includes the following elements:

  • Business case

  • Problem statement

  • Goal statement

  • Project scope

  • Resources

  • Timelines

  • Estimated benefits

Tools: Pareto Chart and SIPOC

Measure

The main goal of this phase is to collect data related to the scope of the project. At this stage, the emphasis is on quantifying the parameters, measuring them, collecting the necessary data, and measuring using various methods.

Tools: Process flowcharts, Benchmarking, Run charts, Gage R & R, and Process capability.

Analyze

Root cause analysis can be performed at this stage. Sophisticated analytical tools are used to determine the causes of failures.

Tools: Fishbone Diagram, Brainstorming, Histogram, 5 Whys, Hypothesis testing, Time series plots, and Scatter plot.

Improve

After identifying the final causes, you need to find solutions that will improve the process. Part of this phase is activities to identify, test, and implement solutions that address the root causes. Modeling research, experimental development, prototyping are some of the methods used here to improve and increase the efficiency of the process.

Tools: Brainstorming, Mistake-proofing (Poka Yoke), Simulation software, Prototyping, Piloting, and Pugh Matrix.

Control

Typically part of this step is to standardize the process with management plans and work instructions. The control diagrams show the performance of the process. The benefits of the project are discussed and verified in terms of expected value. The purpose of this stage is to ensure that your profits increase.

Tools:  Process sigma calculation, Control charts, Cost saving calculations, and Control plan.

Final Takeaway

In short, the Lean methodology focuses on reducing wastage in the process, and Six Sigma focuses on reducing process variability. However, both methods go hand in hand to take full advantage of the process improvement. An integrated approach to Lean Six Sigma helps to improve process efficiency, optimize resources and increase customer satisfaction while increasing profits and reducing costs.
